Zeta does not know when this year’s campaign would come to a complete close, but what she does know is when the first batch of night phloxes she planted would start to bloom: they would spread their petals tonight and maybe by that time her older brother would have found his way back too, away from the danger and unknowns of the frontlines and return to the comfort and company of his family. So once she’s sung her siblings to sleep and made sure that her grandmother has enough blankets, she steps outside and sits on the patio with a lantern in her hand; head and eyes alternating between staring at her flowers and squinting at the paths that lead to home, stubbornly searching in the darkness for that tall figure she hasn’t seen in months.

The starting wisps of dawn are already lifting the night sky when her dry eyes finally find him, hair in disarray and a leg limping - Zeta does not know the full story on why her brother’s face is all bruised and why the smile he gives her does not reach his eyes either; but what she does know now is that he has come home just like he promised, so she gets on her feet and runs to throw her arms around him as tight as she could, whispering a welcome home into the bloody fabric of his shirt.
